So we’re back for part 2, and we’re meeting a new cast of characters and we’re on a new planet. Sci-fi is by far and away my favorite genre. I love the world building and escaping into something totally different in time and space. There’s limitless potential, but I do appreciate when I can pick up on subtle nods and influences from other things. There are some not so subtle references in this second entry in The Wretched. But it’s still fun.
Deltri’s Bar plays rock electronica… Now I have a bad habit of downloading, uninstalling, and reinstalling TouchTunes on my phone whenever I go into some bars. Depending on how much I have to drink, you can catch me playing all kinds of shit. But most definitely some Limp Bizkit at some point. I wonder who’s DJ’ing at Deltri’s?
Our three characters for this scene are Oliver, Cassidy, and Dez. Oliver is to be our new main protagonist, Cassidy is ripped straight out of Preacher, and Dez is the one who decides to entertain Cassidy in his stories. This is my sincere attempt at a Quentin Tarantino diner scene.
Dez has an Irish accent, which is an interesting choice. Even now I have a hard time writing dialogue, I don’t feel I can write in enough different voices, but I went for it by making Dez Irish.
I’m pretty sure Bentali is a different alien race. I’m imagining something like the Asari from the Mass Effect video game series (probably my favorite, right up there with the original Halo games).
“Hand cannon.” I guess I thought I was cool calling it that, or even having Cassidy say it, but it would’ve been way better if I just had him say gun or blaster, or anything else. It’s kind of cringy now.
“Tell the everyone we’re cool.” Hey, I think this is my first big typo. This was my final draft too, so that got missed. Also there’s pounding on the door now, but were they screaming first? Did they have a big fight everyone heard? Not really clear, kind of jumped a bit on this.
I love the skepticism from Dez and Oliver hearing this story, and I love how Cassidy couldn’t care less about it.
“Wouldn’t be surprised to see a murder suicide on the news along with our little business.” Well that’s kind of a dark turn. But the fact they’ve got some “little business” that’s newsworthy, that definitely makes this a Tarantino diner scene ripoff. Especially with the cops coming.
When Oliver is talking O.S., it means off-screen.
I’m proud of myself for making it a point to show what all three of these guys are doing inside the bar just before things go off. It adds a little realism and depth to these characters I feel.
That customer really got fucked up by the door blasting off. Is Deltri’s a known spot for criminals, or do the cops just not care?
smRT rounds sound pretty messy, but the name comes from a Simpsons gag. I don’t really believe they’d be standard issue though.
Cassidy gets a gnarly death. That little pause after he’s been tagged in the forehead, and then POP. Same for Dez losing an arm. You can tell this is an R-rated screenplay.
“Untau Jai gang.” Sounds cool, but no idea what that is supposed to mean.
With these intercut news clips, I can’t help but think I was going for some Frank Miller Dark Knight Returns vibes or something.
“Inside sources say that one of the members was possibly working undercover.” I have no idea if this would actually be reported like this on the news, but it’s a nice little hint as to maybe why Kelse was late showing up to Deltri’s Bar with everyone else.
The planet Xanadu is not an idyllic place like the definition would imply. But you probably already guessed that, we’ve already been there once before… SPOILERS.
Paparazzi drones doesn’t seem so far-fetched.
I like that hot towel joke.
Are we setting up for Con Air in the next installment? We’ll see about that, but we’ll definitely meet our big bad coming up this Friday.
